Creative Writing (5-8th graders) @ Oakton Academy

In this class students will become comfortable and confident with a variety of writing genres, focusing heavily on developing an individual voice, perspective, and style as writers. Not only will this make students more confident in their writing, it will introduce them to vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills that will become invaluable for their future academic goals, including middle and high school, college and beyond. Genres covered will include Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry, Personal Essay, and Digital Writing. ”

The course will be taught by Ms. Courtney. See her BIO below. She has received overwhelming praise from students and parents. Ms. Courtney brings the enthusiasm, vibrancy, and fun of learning to the classroom. Her dedication and individual attention to her students enable her class to enjoy learning. 

Instructor Ms. Courtney brings her excellent English language and literature background, and her years of experience in working with children to Oakton Academy. She loves Shakespeare’s work, and directs plays for the children as they learn Shakespeare’s work. She majored in English Creative Writing, and has had extensive experience working with advanced and gifted middle and high school students in GMU’s Early Identification program (EIP), a program designed to promote promising college-bound students.

Ms. Courtney has been mentoring, tutoring and teaching to students from K – 12. Her master’s major is on Curriculum and Instruction. She brings her creative and unique teaching style to our classic reading and writing program.

Ms. Courtney also has years of experience working with the Girl Scouts of America, helping prepare young students for a successful future academically and professionally. She won the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. She has also won a variety of academic awards, including the AP Scholar Award presented by the College Board. Ms. Courtney is excited to bring her passion for Literature, Language, Debate, and Education to Oakton Academy.
