Introduction to Geometry

Geometry Introduction:

This introduction to Geometry course is designed for rising 8th graders, who will take Honors Geometry in the fall semester.  It will help students develop mathematical reasoning, critical thinking and problem solving skills. Many students who take the Geometry introduction class feel they are more ready and more confident in taking the Honors Geometry in the fall semester, and they are more motivated to achieve high.

The textbook must be purchased separately by the student.

Topics of Geometry include:

  • Deductive and inductive reasoning
  • Direct and indirect proof
  • Parallel lines and planes
  • Congruence and similarity
  • Polygons
  • Perimeter, area, and volume
  • Right triangles
  • Circles
  • Coordinate geometry
  • Transformations and symmetry
  • Constructions and Loci

Per many parents’ requests, we are happy to announce additional SAT Subject Math Level 2, SAT Subject Physics in the spring.

Math Professor N. has taught Math for over 26 years at all levels, from middle and high school through advanced college level. He helped establish the advanced mathematics program at the new Governor’s School at Innovation Park, serving as the Mathematics Chairperson and liaison between the School, and the George Mason University Math Department. He taught  AP Calculus AB/BC, Multivariable Calculus, SAT, PSAT Math, AP Calculus, Pre-Calculus, Advanced Algebra  2 / Trigonometry, as well as supervised student STEM projects and served as student adviser.

Professor N. is a dedicated Math teacher and delivers his Math teaching with enthusiasm: engaging students, sparking curiosity, and jump-starting motivation. He taught SAT Math and AP Calculus in the spring and summer sessions, and received overwhelming praise from the students and parents. Many his students received perfect score of 800 in their SAT I and SAT 2 tests. See 2017 SAT Report:  SAT English.

We are very proud of having him bring his 26 years’ Mathematics teaching experience to Oakton Academy.

“Professor N. made the Math learning so much fun. I enjoyed his SAT teaching over the summer at Oakton Academy for 4 weeks.”   – a rising junior student

The course includes all elements outlined in the SAT Subject Math 2 test topics, see College Board SAT test requirements for Math Subject, link: SAT Subject Math Level 2. Classes will consist of a pretest, lectures, question and answer, problem solving and a post-test assessment.  Students should be doing practice tests outside of class. Active participation by the students will be an essential element of getting full value out of the SAT Subject Math 2 Prep Class.
